When it comes to the light fantastic, one van is leading the competition a merry dance – the stylish Citan Sport from Mercedes-Benz.
That’s the verdict of Adam Hetherington, a Director of Ipswich-based Starlight Dance Floors, and the proud new owner of an eye-catching metallic black example of the high-specification model. Powered by an exceptionally fuel-efficient 90 hp engine, his Citan Sport 109 CDI was supplied by East Anglia Dealer Orwell Truck & Van.
The Citan is the smallest model in the Mercedes-Benz Vans range and the Long-bodied Sport variant, which was launched earlier this year, features a number of visual enhancements, including colour-coded bumpers and door mirrors, daytime driving lights, a chrome front-grille, sidebars and tailgate trim, and 16-inch, multi-spoke alloy wheels. Inside, meanwhile, Citan Sport customers ride in air-conditioned comfort, and also get a leather-trimmed steering wheel, Sports mats and badging.
Founded in 2010 by Adam and his father David, Starlight Dance Floors supplies a comprehensive range of portable dance floors, along with staging, sound production and lighting equipment. It also offers professional DJs for hire.
The company boasts an impressive portfolio of corporate clients, many of which are based in London – among them the famous Savoy Hotel – as well as serving the private market for weddings and civil partnerships, parties, proms and leavers balls, and bar mitzvah celebrations.
In addition to its new Citan Sport, Starlight Dance Floors runs a pair of 3.5-tonne
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, both of which are also finished in black. “We use the bigger vehicles to carry the very substantial amount of kit we have to move for big jobs,” explained Adam.
“The Sprinters have proved exceptionally reliable, which is crucial in our business – you can’t fail to show up for someone’s wedding – while at the same time helping to reinforce the image of quality that we have built up over the last five years.
“However, I also needed a vehicle for client meetings, site visits and smaller hires. Orwell loaned me a courtesy Citan while one of our Sprinters was in for its service and I thought I was going to hate it, because every small van I’ve ever driven has been rubbish.
“In fact, quite the opposite was true… I drove it, and I loved it. Then, a couple of weeks later, I happened to be back at the Dealer’s premises and saw this black Citan Sport being unloaded from the back of a lorry. I thought ‘Wow! That’s a really cool van’, so I bought it there and then, before they’d even cleaned and prepared it.”
He added: “I couldn’t be happier with my new Mercedes-Benz. It’s comfortable, very economical to run, and the perfect size for running into and out of London. Plus, of course, it looks fantastic!”
